Week One Reflection

Week One Reflection

In Class

Image result for engageThis weeks topic was Campus engagement and what it means to be engaged. We discussed first in small groups then in the entire class group. We also watched a ted talk (https://www.youtube.-com/watch?v=29tJAgc54RA) about why we are here in college and About paving our own paths instead of the ones laid out by others, and if college was for everyone.

Class discussion

As I said, in the discussion we talked about the word "engage" and said that inside of college it typically means to get involved in the community, join clubs and community service. But, we also talked about how it means to engage in class like how we ask question and answered questions. I feel that this is especially important because it not only help the class instructor to notice us and began to develop a rapport but also helps us to stay to stay focused because I find it hard to focus and listen for long periods of time without engaging in the class. We also dissected what it means to engage in a conversation and how its more than just talking, its about listening and being respectful. Really trying to see thing from there perspective and understand them. Outside of class I tried to put these things into affect. I began looking into all the clubs I was interested in. I also began to to try and notice and stop every time my mind began to wonder in class and just in normal conversation to actively listen to others to show respect to people .

Course Materials

In the ted talk "how to graduate with a job you like and with less debt"(https://www.youtube.-com/watch?v=29tJAgc54RA). it made me take stock and reevaluate why I'm here in college and just how much time and money it is costing me to be here. At first it was easy to say that I'm here for a degree and a job because that is what I want to do, and that is true to an extant. But if I'm being completely honest I never actually considered any other options. I felt pressure from my friends and family and I have never completely loved school or formal education. I guess now though I'm committed to college so what I can do now is take advantage of what all the campus has to offer, and be proactive. I can also learn to better evaluate my decision and ask what  I want out of life

(https://onbeing.org/blog/the-disease-of-being-busy/). This article did a good job on pointing out all we do to use our vast technologies to stay busy. It made me think about how we value doing things over connecting to others and ourselves. when we talk to other we discuss what we are doing rather than our emotions or dreams. The other article "Why asking for help is so difficult"(https://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/07/business/07shortcuts.html?pagewanted=all) discussed techniques on how to ask for help and how to ask. I thought it quite informative and I will probably put these techniques to use in the coming weeks of classes!

Personal Reflection

Its really nice to be here at Georgia Southern. Its a nice thing to think about when I get too stressed. The people here are very nice and there are a ton of different ways it seems to get help for classes. There is basically a club here for every possible interest allowing us to meet plenty of new people. As far as my the two things that will help me the most its probably the tutoring sessions and office hours. The tutoring sessions located in the library are particularly nice because they allow me to learn from some less intimidating that the professor. and the office hours are always nice because I can ask specific questions before or after class at multiple occasions, and also allow me to get to know my professor. These resources are nice and will allow me to get head of my school work and give me time to engage in the other things Georgia Southern has to offer.
