Week three:Class discussion/Free Speech
Unfortunately this week we did not meet for class so no discussion were had but there was still plenty of material to look over. In the article "the power of dialogue" (Found here)the author says dialogue is not just a conversation but a conversation where real empathy is show and where it is constructive and thing s are accomplished. This could be a helpful thing to keep in mind in our upcoming classroom dialogues. Also in the article "12 Essential Communication Skills not Taught in School"(Found here) It discusses non-verbal communication and its significance. I feel that non-verbal communication is important for college freshman because it can instantly show your interest in the person and the conversation. this is also the skill I probably need to work on the most. Every time some one nobs along with a conversation and makes eye contact I feel that they are trying to empathize with me. In the article "What exactly is micro-aggression"(Found here) I learn what micro-aggregation is. I was unfamiliar with it and will be on the lookout to try and stop myself from doing it. All over the readings and the videos on free speech made me reevaluate my options on free speech. I believe my option is this free speech should be allowed what-ever the message should be. So I suppose that includes hate speech. However I feel that hate speech and threats often very close to one another and threats should not be allowed in any form; it takes the right others have to be happy and feel safe. In the video "Free speech vs. Hate speech on College Campuses"(Found Here) it makes a good point that if we allow the government the power to censor hate speech we open the door for the government to censor other things we may not expect such as SNL skits. I think it is important to remember we shape culture and if we hear speech that is hateful as students at this college it is our responsibility to speech out against it took create a more inclusive and compassionate culture.

I totally agree with the importance of empathy and non verbal communication in classroom discussion and how it's beneficial for classroom discussions. I didn't know about micro aggressions either. It's really hard to accept that hate speech is protected under free speech even though it's clearly legal. But then again, hate speech is subjective what may be offensive to you may not be offensive to others. However, I agree that we should ensure our colleagues aren't feeling threatened by forms of hate speech and that everyone has a right to feel safe .
