Week 4: Academic Integrity and A Growth Mindset
In Class this we mainly discussed the factors that contribute to a quality and productive class discussions, what it means to have a growth mindset, and violation of academic integrity  and the consequences  of those violations. Unfortunately we were still behind schedule due to Hurricane Dorian so we were not able to really talk about academic success, but there was a lot of links and things give for us to consider given this week about academic success.
One interesting reading found here was about Georgia Southern's withdraw policy and how we should make the decision if we should or should not  withdraw from a course. There are multiple draw backs to withdrawing such as we only get a total of six withdraws in your college career so we need to really think if we should use it before just wasting a withdraw. Also an other thing to consider is it could push back your graduation date so this is something I would really not prefer to do. Push back your graduation date may cost me extra money which would be quite annoying.
During our class discussion Monday we talked about class discussion and how we should all be very respectful and try to consider and empathize with what others have said so we would be too mean and accidentally offend someone, We also discussed how it is important to keep an open mind to really get something out of the discussion. Then possibly my favorite question of the day was posed "Do you think our generation is open-minded" Which got me thinking. I think we as a generation are fairly open-minded and more open minded than past generations toward others, certainty we could be doing better, but  we are improving. But where we are lacking is how set we are in our opinions and how offended we get when some one just simply sees things differently than us. I certainly do this sometimes. But I think one solution to this is to have a growth mind set.
A growth mind set as we discussed in class is a useful tool to help us become better learners. SO if we constantly look at situations from different points of view we will be less inclined to be so cemented in our views to get offended when someone questions our opinions. In the video Found Here. It says,  A fixed mind believes "skills are born" while someone with a Growth-mindset believes, "skills are learned." People with a growth-mindset think they can improve and are willing to take the steps required to improve . I would like to say I always feel that I can improve but I don't.  I guess all I can do is work on the things I'm bad at til I get better.
