Week 6 : Diversity and Inclusion

Documented was about Jose's personal story about being undocumented and how there are very little options for undocumented Americans to gain citizenship in the United States.  White people was mostly about what white people feel about race and diversity. Jose interviewed many people about white peoples take what life is like for white people. He found that may white people claim to just not notice race and they say this to avoid the issue and not discuss it. But when interviewed alone Caucasians say that they feel that discrimination against whites is just as much as a problem as discrimination against minorities. This turns out to come mostly from one place. The reason white people believe this, is the myth that scholarships are mostly going to minorities. As the documentary points out this is mostly untrue. White people are more likely to get scholarships than minorities. I heard this myth a lot last year when applying for scholarships last year. Many people I know would blame not getting into a college on them being white or male. Students would tell other students would belittle others academic achievements by saying that they only got the scholarship or acceptance to a college because they were a minority or female.  I think these things stem from others feeling dejected after some rejection letters. People will blame this on anything to try and console themselves but the real reason is because college is extremely expanse so scholarships are very competitive and only going to be more competitive. College applications were very stressful but this is no excuse for potentiating a myth and belittling others accomplishments. The other film document made me see how little ways migrants have to become full US. It also convinced me to not use the term Illegal when talking about undocumented immigrants. But also so good points were made in class that they did immigrate here illegally so it is just describing what they did witch was immigrate illegally. I feel that the term illegal is just a little to harsh to use. This week has certainly made me think a lot more then I normally would about race and help me be more open minded.
