Week 10: Degree Engagement
Week 10: Degree Engagement
This week in Class we went back to discussing more specific things about college and how to be successful in college rather than the larger social issue in america we had been discussing last week. Although I missed the lively and insightful conversations of last week it was nice to get back into a routine. This week our main topics were Degrees and values; as well as techniques to help us accomplish our goals.
Doctora started the class Monday by showing us all about the Catalog(List found here). The catalog contains the list of recommended core classes as well as all the requirements to graduate with a specific degree. If you want to change majors, which is a very common occurrence, and want to know the amount of extra work it would take the catalog will outline it for you. Doctora mentioned that about 5,000 students filled out a request to change majors last year alone and it is okay to change majors. College is just as much a time to find out what to do with your life and discover and to cultivate passions as it is to learn about a particular topic and get a degree. Personally I don't see myself changing my major out of engineering. But, who knows? I could defiantly change my mind later down the line.
On Wednesday we changed our focus from our majors, to our values and goals in life. The values I choose and think I value the most were: wisdom, love, improvement, open-mindedness, and trust. I choose these values not because I have these traits right now, but because I admire these traits in others and I hope in the future to have them. We also discussed how to think about achieving our goals and watched a ted talk given by a chess grand master about "retrograde analysis" (Found here). Retrograde analysis is a technique of looking at the end goal and working backwards to solve a particular problem. This technique can be used to make big life decisions. If you know what you want out of life and what your goals are you can aptly make decisions to achieve those goals. So the big question is what do you want and who do you want to be. I definitely need to do some personal reflection to discover this and need to think of ways to use the resources I have now in college to make these goals a reality.
