Week 7: Diversity and Inclusion III
Image result for instructions not includedIn class this week we watched a movie call "Instructions Not Included" Link Here before meeting on Monday. We were all shocked by the ending with the daughter of Valentin being the one with the illness. The movie was quite funny in the beginning but then towards the end was really sad. the film explores many theme such as parenthood, what it means to be a father, commitment, and facing fears. The theme of parenthood brought up a good discussion in our class about how courts would be inclined to give custody of a child the biological mother regardless of the situation.  This is an issue I was completely ignorant about and was happy to learn about. I found it sad to think about all the custody cases that where potentially ruled wrong and children suffering due to the ruling because of the bias the judge or the institution holds. Although we did not discuss the other themes as much in class I feel that the theme of fear really drove the movie in both humor and in emotion. Watching the actor react to scary situation was humorous while watching Valentin face his fears for his daughter was quite touching. Another large part of the movie was stereotypes. I didn't even notice it while watching the film but when we started to discuss this in class it became apparent that the film relied upon stereotypes for much of its humor. Some of the stereotypes are pretty obvious with the playboy/ single bachelor  stereotype being portrayed in the start of the film and the stereotype of the Hispanic man refusing to learn English throughout the film, but others where harder to notice. One of my peers pointed out that there are transgender stereotypes in the film. One I had seen (the casting scene for the mother) but the other instance I had not noticed at all the truck scene towards the end of the film. The joke had kind of been lost in translation because I had not know that Lupe was a women's name so I found this sort surprising. All in all this week I learned about issues I didn't know about and got to find a film I probably wouldn't have watched if it wasn't for this class, but thoroughly enjoyed.
