Week 11

Week 11: Registration and Powerful Questions

This week in class we discussed how to register for classes and what to keep in mind, and what powerful questions are and how to ask better questions. On Monday, Erin Martin came to our class to discuss how to register for our classes. This took away a lot of my stress I had about the registration process. On Monday night I spent a lot of time on the course search trying to develop my schedule for next semester, and about an hour or two later I came up with one. I plan on waking up early tomorrow morning to get all the classes I want. I am very glad we went over this in class; It helped me tremendously.
On Wednesday We came into class prepared to talk about an article called "The Art of Powerful Questions" (Link Here). It was quite long, but also Interesting. It brought up many examples of how great and insightful questions sparked many success stories. It taught us how to construct powerful questions; It is best to construct question about how or why rather than simple yes or no questions. It is also good to not make the attended audience for the question defensive, because if you want a constructive conversation to start you probably want the others you are discussing with to feel free to discuss. Another thing to keep in mind is your own assumptions. If you keep those in mind you will be able to better see the scope of the question.

We also got into groups of two and looked at other peoples questions and were tasked with critiquing and improving the anonymous questions we received. One of the questions I received was "How can I over come my fear of putting myself out there so I can meet like-minded people?" The question is good. It provokes thought and deals with larger issues like overcoming fear, but I think the scope could be larger. The question really only applies to the situation now and their own personal situation. The other question was "Why was Trump criticized for his actions when previously Obama was praised for the death of Osama Bin Laden?" The context for this question is Recently Trump was booed at a baseball game after He ordered the killing of  the founder of ISIS. This question certainty makes you question your current perception of US politics and why political alignment can influence your reactions. The question also has the ability to make someone defensive and also it seems possible that perhaps trump was booed at the baseball game for peoples dislike of him not because of his recent actions pertaining to the death of the ISIS founder.
