Week 12

Week 12: Academic research  
Related image          This week in class we focused entirely on academic research. The topic is extremely important because we will be spending much of our time here at Georgia southern writing and conducting research for a verity of classes. On Monday we mostly went over how to use Galileo and different filters we could put on our searches to make the articles that came up relevant to our research. I thought that the time filter was particularly useful considering that the topics I usually choose to research are typically about current issues. When actually using Galileo I found it to be really very simple and straight forward. Also we where give the small research activity to do and reminded that we do not have to do a research paper for this FYE class, which I am thankful for. 
           For my mini research activity I chose the question, " How could the education system better prepare students for a job market that is ever changing and shrinking due to automation?" I tried to use the techniques that we learned last week to craft a more powerful and relevant question. In the course of my research I learned that there is no one answer and a multitude of solutions and curriculum changes can be used. Solutions like placing more importance on problem solving and people skills and other skills that are less likely to be automated any time soon. The articles I found were "3 practical solutions to Offset Automation's impact on work"(Link Here) for my simple google search, and "The Future of Work is Uncertain, Schools should worry now" (Link Here) For my scholarly article. (Link HERE) Trough the CRAAP test I found that all in all my google article was actually quite good and probably could be used on a research paper but the scholarly article use still better. The CRAAP test showed me how much better it is to use Galileo rather than just google.

Week 10: Degree Engagement               This week in Class we went back to discussing more specific things about college and how to be successful in college rather than the larger social issue in america we had been discussing last week. Although I missed the lively and insightful conversations of last week it was nice to get back into a routine. This week our main topics were Degrees and values; as well as techniques to help us accomplish our goals.                Doctora started the class Monday by showing us all about the Catalog( List found here ). The catalog contains the list of recommended core classes as well as all the requirements to graduate with a specific degree. If you want to change majors, which is a very common occurrence, and want to know the amount of extra work it would take the catalog will outline it for you.                                                          Week 15: Final As the first semester ends, I look back at all the interesting and lively discussions this FYE class as had and I think next semester I am really going to miss it. Its funny to think about how I expected so much to dislike this class, but now I want it to continue. In this FYE class we discussed a ton of different issues from asking good inquisitive questions to a two-week long deliberation on the “Make your Home Among Strangers” controversy. This class was unlike many of my other classes because it did not have tests or lectures but instead challenged me to question myself to find the goals I want out of college and how to approach different perspectives. Week One Reflection

Week One Reflection  In Class This weeks topic was Campus engagement and what it means to be engaged. We discussed first in small groups then in the entire class group. We also watched a ted talk ( https://www.youtube.-com/watch?v=29tJAgc54RA ) about why we are here in college and About paving our own paths instead of the ones laid out by others, and if college was for everyone. Class discussion  As I said, in the discussion we talked about the word "engage" and said that inside of college it typically means to get involved in the community, join clubs and community service. But, we also talked about how it means to engage in class like how we ask question and answered questions. I feel that this is especially important because it not only help the class instructor to notice us and began to develop a rapport but also helps us to stay to stay focused because I find it hard to focus and listen for long periods of time without engaging in the class.
