Week 15: Final As the first semester ends, I look back at all the interesting and lively discussions this FYE class as had and I think next semester I am really going to miss it. Its funny to think about how I expected so much to dislike this class, but now I want it to continue. In this FYE class we discussed a ton of different issues from asking good inquisitive questions to a two-week long deliberation on the “Make your Home Among Strangers” controversy. This class was unlike many of my other classes because it did not have tests or lectures but instead challenged me to question myself to find the goals I want out of college and how to approach different perspectives. In this class we had three learning objectives which are, develop information literacy skills, engage with my degree program and learn about the resources available to me at Georgia Southern, and lastly discuss diversity and inclusion. For this blog I will be e

Week 13&14: Motorcycle Diaries For the weeks of 13 and 14 in FYE we discussed the life of Che Guevara. We were required to watch the film motorcycles dairies ( Link here ) to introduce to Che. I personally had no idea who he was and what his actions were, So this was a completely new topic. Upon first finishing the film I google who he was and was completely shocked to find out about the horrible things this man had done. In class Wednesday we went more in depth in to the later life of Che, and also about how his face is over many merchandise as a kind of symbol to rebellion. I feel like this should not be done. He was a terrible person who should not be glorified. It seems wrong that companies would profit off these things. On Wednesday we listen to the song " Al Otro Lado Del Rio" (Link Here) and learned that it won a Oscar. W e also discussed his intentions and whether or not he was justified. If he was evil or a hero?

Week 12: Academic research This week in class we focused entirely on academic research. The topic is extremely important because we will be spending much of our time here at Georgia southern writing and conducting research for a verity of classes. On Monday we mostly went over how to use Galileo and different filters we could put on our searches to make the articles that came up relevant to our research. I thought that the time filter was particularly useful considering that the topics I usually choose to research are typically about current issues. When actually using Galileo I found it to be really very simple and straight forward. Also we where give the small research activity to do and reminded that we do not have to do a research paper for this FYE class, which I am thankful for. For my mini research activity I chose the question, " How could the education system better prepare students for a job market that is ever changing and shrinking due to a

Week 11: Registration and Powerful Questions This week in class we discussed how to register for classes and what to keep in mind, and what powerful questions are and how to ask better questions. On Monday, Erin Martin came to our class to discuss how to register for our classes. This took away a lot of my stress I had about the registration process. On Monday night I spent a lot of time on the course search trying to develop my schedule for next semester, and about an hour or two later I came up with one. I plan on waking up early tomorrow morning to get all the classes I want. I am very glad we went over this in class; It helped me tremendously. On Wednesday We came into class prepared to talk about an article called "The Art of Powerful Questions" ( Link Here ). It was quite long, but also Interesting. It brought up many examples of how great and insightful questions sparked many success stories. It taught us how to construct pow

Week 10: Degree Engagement This week in Class we went back to discussing more specific things about college and how to be successful in college rather than the larger social issue in america we had been discussing last week. Although I missed the lively and insightful conversations of last week it was nice to get back into a routine. This week our main topics were Degrees and values; as well as techniques to help us accomplish our goals. Doctora started the class Monday by showing us all about the Catalog( List found here ). The catalog contains the list of recommended core classes as well as all the requirements to graduate with a specific degree. If you want to change majors, which is a very common occurrence, and want to know the amount of extra work it would take the catalog will outline it for you. Doctora mentioned that about 5,000 students filled out a request to change majors last year alone and it is okay to change majors. College is just as m

Week 9: Controversy and White Privilege So this week in class we were supposed to discuss the film Elian, A documentary about Elian Gonzalez and the controversy around him, but after the speech give by Crucet the Author of Make your Home Among Strangers (the talk can be found here ) our class time was taken up discussing the controversy around the speech and book burning after the fact. In class we took an anonymous survey about our feelings about everything that occurred, and though the answers to the survey and in class discussion it was apparent that many people thought that Crucet was being insensitive when she made a comment about an active shooter and the comments about ignoring white women's tears, but the entire class agreed that the students were rude and even cruel with there statements and actions after the speech. I was taken back with the statements about white women tears, but I didn't even register the insensitivity of the gun violence comment

Week 8: Home Among Strangers On Monday we came into class and prepared to talk and discuss about the first half of the of the book Make Your Home Among Strangers written by Jennine Capo Crucet. The book is centered around Lizet, a freshmen Cuban-american who most overcome many obstacles that a freshman may encounter. One of which is now feeling like an outsider because she is from a poorer family and is non-white and now is among wealthy white people who appear to be really fitting in and have things figured out. In class we talked about our overall impressions of the book. Everyone was pretty indifferent to the book, and no one seemed to have any negative emotions toward the book. Personally I liked it. Probably wasn't my favorite book ever but it seemed to me to be a completely logical choice of a book for a first year seminar class, because the book is almost completely about the college freshmen experience of Lizet. Although I cannot completely rel
