Week 15: Final
As the first semester ends, I look back at all the interesting and lively discussions this FYE class as had and I think next semester I am really going to miss it. Its funny to think about how I expected so much to dislike this class, but now I want it to continue. In this FYE class we discussed a ton of different issues from asking good inquisitive questions to a two-week long deliberation on the “Make your Home Among Strangers” controversy. This class was unlike many of my other classes because it did not have tests or lectures but instead challenged me to question myself to find the goals I want out of college and how to approach different perspectives. In this class we had three learning objectives which are, develop information literacy skills, engage with my degree program and learn about the resources available to me at Georgia Southern, and lastly discuss diversity and inclusion. For this blog I will be examining how we achieved these objectives, but I will reflect on how I can use the skills I learned from this class.
First, I will talk about the objective learn informative literacy skills. We did not cover this too much in class, and that make since because I think we have all done plenty of research papers in High school. So, we learned how to navigate the specific databases that Georgia southern offered. Looking back at my past blog I said,” When actually using Galileo I found it to be really very simple and straight forward.”(1)(Link to blog here) So, although I found Galileo easy to navigate determining the credibility of the article with the crapp test was harder and new to me. I think research is important. To quote my fellow classmate Charlotte in her blog (2)(Link to blog here) “It’s very important to learn how to write research papers and how to incorporate accurate sources to support your topic.” Research is a large part of many writing assignments and I’m sure I will need to know how to do quality research in the future at Georgia Southern and it is always important to be able to tell if you are getting accurate information. I will continue to develop my skills at research by making it a habit to investigate the credibility of all my news sources.
For the second learning objective we were asked to discover resources for our degree program and resources for the whole campus. We discussed these topics over two weeks once in the first week and the second in the tenth week. Way back in the first blog I wrote, “the two things that will help me the most it’s probably the tutoring sessions and office hours.”(3)( Link to blog here) These resources did help me this semester but, thankfully my roommates were also a very helpful resource to get me though this semester with good grades. Its kind of interesting to look back at what I thought the first semester was going to be like in the first week of school. Moving on to degree engagement, in week ten we learned a lot more about degree programs and were encouraged to explore career types in our own perspective degrees. We also learned something that was completely new to me called retrograde analysis. This entails looking into your end goals and working backwards to get your steps to that goal. We look at our career choices are considered the steps to get there. In my week ten blog post I wrote, “the big question is what do you want and who do you want to be. I definitely need to do some personal reflection to discover this and need to think of ways to use the resources I have now in college to make these goals a reality.”(4)(Link to blog here) I definitely have not been as proactive as I would have liked to of been in taking the steps, I need to accomplish my goals, but nevertheless I do use retrograde analysis a lot when it comes to decision making so its been a useful lesson. I hope to continue this analytical way of think in my future.
The last objective is learning to recognize your own bias and perspective while being inclusive of everyone. We spent a lot of time on this subject as a class. This makes a lot of sense because its an extremely complex subject that we have never been taught before. For that reason, I am thankful that we covered it. In my blog post the first week we discussed inclusion I said that the discussions made me think more than “I normally would about race and helped me be more open minded.“ (5)(link to blog here) I really hope that this class has made me more open-minded and accepting. In my peer’s blog Mathew reflects in week 5 about the film we saw “finding the way home” about young migrants coming to the US he says, “Even talking about this film with my classmates was really difficult for me because I was so close to tears when I finish watching it.”(6)(Link to blog here) These discussions have real impact. We need to learn about others struggles so we can help and learn to be more open-minded to them. I hope that I have been more open minded through this class. I have been trying to have more civil discussion with people outside of class also. I recall a conversation I had with my aunt who was struggling with the idea of there being a non-binary gender spectrum over thanksgiving. I think we had positive and polite conversation. I think the class time in FYE had prepared me for this. These soft skills will serve me well in the future.
All in all, this semester has gone by really fast. I really enjoyed this class and will miss it. I will take what I have learned and apply it to my life.
